Gala Drop + Apiento (DJ Set) + guests
Gala Drop began life as as a dirty-kneed, delay-pedal drone duo in the Bairro Alto district of Lisbon, opening for the likes of Gang Gang Dance and Excepter.
New album II (Golf Recordings, Nov, 2014) is the result of a year's solid rehearsal – a mixture of composition and collective improvisation – and a decade of organic evolution and dogged determinism. The addition of Jerry the Cat's vocals has changed the band's musical dynamic yet again. All the elements that made this band so unique and interesting are still there, but their jams are now more tightly structured and focused, more radio- and club-friendly, shorter and more song-orientated. Jerry's work as a percussionist made him a sympathetic musical collaborator, but his voice is a delightful surprise, adding an unexpectedly soulful dimension to their latest work. He has brought a bittersweet Detroit vibe to some of the tracks on II – not a bangin' Techno sensibility, but a subtle after-echo of Detroits Past, Present and Future, a lineage that stretches back from the Bellville Three to The Parliaments and beyond. Its not an obvious fit until you plug in and listen, but the Lisbon and Detroit vibes complement one another beautifully; it's like the two cities were always spiritually twinned, but only Gala Drop ever noticed. They are a restless, constantly-evolving musical adventure – a labour of love – that passionately soaks up sounds from different times and places, and tries to imagine some future-past something that might point us towards a better world.
